Social Media Never Tasted So Good

Last night’s Himmarshee Twineup Take 2 at Himmarshee’s Side Bar in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale was a “pairing-and-pouring adventure!” The event featured three wine flights paired with passed appetizers, and was sponsored by Matthew Horbund, @mmwine, and Jan Idelman, @janIdelman.

If you’re looking for a classy alternative to the normal tweetup setting, this is an idea for you – wine, food, friends. There were prizes given away sponsored by PokenGirl and Pickchur, and along with the price of the tasting everyone received a coupon for $20 off of a $60 food or wine purchase at the venue.

To start the evening we had a 2008 Murphy-Goode Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma County. This light, crisp wine paired well with the petit crab cakes with pickled habenero tartart and island spiced shrimp and yucca croquettes with drunken mango salsa.

The second flight was an Australian born 2005 Hope Shiraz. This Shiraz was more fruity and less peppery than most tend be. The pairing for this was amazing! It was a duck confit & sweet potato empanada with vanilla-shiraz macerated cherries.

The final tasting was a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Tahuantinsuyu from Mendoza, Argentina – one of my favorite regions, especially for Malbec! This was paired with mushroom & cambazola toasts with oil cured campari tomatoes.

The evening had a mix of good food, good wine, and good conversations – what more could you ask for? It was nice to meet @PamRockSoFl @enzobalc, @stacykinney, @SisterMary, and thanks to @mmWine and @jidelman for hosting the event! Shoot’n Hot & Wet on Brickell

Brickell

Sunday and Monday were photo-filled days. Sunday saw a small contingent of photographers from Shoot Miami converge on Brickell Avenue. We met in front of Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant located a little south of the famed Brickell Avenue Bridge and Miami Circle. The small group that I was with wandered a for a while before finding ourselves at a Miami Metromover station – Elevated transportation stations are a great place to get photographs from in Miami or any other metropolitan area that has them. After getting off the Metromover we got stuck under a pavilion waiting for a rain storm to pass until it was time to return to Gordon Biersch for some food and good conversation

Monday evening was the monthly Shoot Miami general meeting. The photography theme was “architecture.” I saw some really nice HDR images that were not over processed – an all too common abuse of Photoshop’s power. Some of the photos that come from that group are amazing!

Shoot Miami’s next schedule event is October 3 and 4 at the Dragon Boat races in Miami, but there is rumor of a Halloween shoot in the works. Details on the group can be found here.

Home Brewed Dialect

Dialect

Dialect – a monthly art and music event at Brew Urban Café in the Himmarshee area of Downtown Ft. Lauderdale – was alive tonight with music, beverages …and spray paint. Live music was provided by the DJs of Twilight Notes, drinks were being crafted and poured at the café, and down the street artists were decorating the walls of the soon-to-be-open 18 Rabbit Gallery. If you have never had the opportunity to watch a group of artists transform a drab wall of CMU and boring paint into a masterpiece of color and inspiration, then you should jump at the next opportunity. A good reference is the international graffiti documentary Bomb It by Jon Reiss, but there is no substitute for watching these artists at work – truly amazing! The event, also sponsored by Enticement Design, continued through the night with an after party at The Brick. I can’t wait to see more of these events – Please, liven the Ft. Lauderdale scene with some more of the Miami Graf!

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza Party!

Pizza-TweetupThis evening was the Pizza Tweetup held at Pizza Volante in the Miami Design District – a special thanks to @Lapp and worstpizza.com for organizing the event. The restaurant offered an intimate space inside, and sidewalk dinning outside allowing for conversation with many groups of people. I always enjoy a good face-to-face discussion with people every once in awhile. Tonight was no different; some of those I carried on conversations with were: @Ines, @jarret23, @jeffreycohen, @valpass, @IamNezer, @alexdc, @johnnybond86, and of course @Lapp. The food was delicious, the company was good, and the bar was serving, so it was great night.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to make tomorrow night’s RefreshMiami, but there are plenty of upcoming events for the South Florida social media community like Nuvo Tweetini, Herald Tweetup, a hands-on social media training workshop, and rumors of a Beerup (unconfirmed).

Unmasking the Avatars – Tweetup @ Brio Tuscan Grille

Last night I attended my first tweetup. It was sponsored by the Sun-Sentinel and hosted at Brio Tuscan Grille at the Shops at Pembroke Gardens. Brio had some really good food and drink specials for the group. The food was good, the conversations were engaging, and there were a lot of prizes raffled off. I spent some time talking with @pokengirl about the benefits of using pokens – little characters that “high-four” to transfer contact information instead of everyone having to write each other’s name and information down, the data is then transferred to a privately accessible rolodex-esque database. I had some good conversations with @Murrayiz, @ctiedje, @pbabanes, and @rsm4lsu about everything from work related topics to the use and direction of where social media (twitter, facebook, linkedin, etc) are headed.

It was nice to meet the people behind the twitter avatars last night. I hope to see everyone again, and maybe some new faces, at the PizzaTweetup at Pizza Volante on August 25.

Photo Walk’n – End Game

End_Game

Scott Kelby’s Second-Annual Worldwide Photo Walk finally arrived. The South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida, walk was awesome! We had more than 35 photographers show up with all kinds of photo-taking apparatuses. I stayed with a small group for most of the walk. We covered Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue before meeting up with the rest of the group at Jerry’s Famous Deli.

While at Jerry’s we had the opportunity to get some lunch, re-energize in a little air conditioning, and show each other what photographic finds we acquired while we socialized. From what I saw both the talent base and humor of the group were very strong. Everyone I talked to had a good time.

After lunch a group of us continued our shooting excursion for a few more hours until we were all exhausted from the heat. My small group headed over to Washington Avenue and stopped in for a visit at the Wolfsonian Museum, their current exhibition, Sun Stroke Stimulus, seemed to be a fitting theme for the day – a future post will cover our findings there.

Having shot South Beach several times I shied away from shooting my normal architectural subjects and concentrated more ephemeral topics like graffiti, modes of transportation, etc. Viewing South Beach at a more intimate scale is quite different than shooting whole buildings and panoramas like what I’m used to. It was a fun challenge to broaden my horizons by narrowing my view.

Overall I think the day was a success. A few photo walkers continued on to more photo walks in other areas, or to explore on their own hitting areas like Wynwood, the Holocaust Memorial, and Lincoln Road. I look forward to the next one, whenever it may be.

Photo Walk’n – Final Countdown

Worldwide Phot Walk

The Scott Kelby Second Annual Worldwide Photo Walk is tomorrow morning. This event is so big it got covered by USA Today!

Here are some final updates for the South Beach group:

Make sure you can log in to the site as soon as possible (you received your username & password when you signed up) . This is where you will upload the photos for a chance to win some prizes.

Before the walk

  • Get directions to South Beach if you’re not familiar with the area
  • Make sure your batteries are charged, memory sticks are cleared, etc.
  • Drink plenty of water before the walk
  • Dress comfortably – walking shoes, hats, etc.
  • Try to get to the Starbucks (1455 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33139 – at the North end of Lummus Park) early, we will be taking a group photo before everyone heads out.

During the walk

  • STAY SAFE!
  • Watch where you’re walking while shooting – traffic, pedestrians, uneven ground surfaces, etc may be hazards.
  • Stay away from areas that you’re not comfortable in – dark alleys and the like
  • Drink plenty of fluids and take a break if necessary.

After the walk

  • Meet up with us at Jerry’s Famous Deli if you have the time.
  • Log on to the site and upload NO MORE THAN TWO of your favorite photos to be entered in the competition. (Edited photos are more than welcome)

Deadlines

  • July 25, 11:59 pm EST: Deadline to upload your image(s) for consideration. No photos received after this time will be considered in the contest.
  • August 17: The grand prize winner and 10 honorable mentions will be announced on the Worldwide Photo Walk website.

Side competitions and other fun stuff

Tropicolor/Shoot Miami Photo Contest:

  1. We’re getting a 15% discount from Tropicolor for any of their services, so when you pay for your prints, make sure you ask for it!
  2. Besides submitting your prints online, you can go into the store and use their kiosks to print directly to their printers – it’s cheaper ($0.29 for a 4×6 print, $0.25 with the discount) and may be more convenient for some!
  3. If you can’t make it down to the store, but would still like to participate, you can submit your photos online and then call in after you’ve placed your order and give them your credit card number. Unfortunately, they don’t accept payments online at the moment, so you’ll either have to come into the store and pay (and if you’re already there, why not just use their kiosks?) or do it over the phone.
  4. They should have a special bin set aside for our contest photos – just ask them to put your photos in there! (Don’t forget to have your name and email address written on the print envelope.)

What happens when you stuff 100 people into a room to listen to 6 panelists discuss “How Traditional Media is being influenced by Social Media?”

Last night was the Social Media Club of South Florida (@SMCSF) Meetup held on the 12th floor of Broward College’s downtown building. The panel was moderated by former journalist Agustina Prigoshin (@AgustinaP) and included:

Back in the day we had town criers, then newspapers came about to deliver our daily dose of news. Now a new generation has ushered in a variable feast of town criers through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and even Flickr. They hawk their own brand of news through every available outlet, from PDAs to computers screens and any other conduit that’s backlit in RGB. So, what does this panel of traditional newsies have to say about the brave new social media frontier?

They almost all agree on several points:

  • That they have gone through a trial and error phase of what works and what doesn’t, e.g. While Facebook fan pages are great, they may cause problems with RSS feeds.
  • Though their circulation is down for physical products, their media reach is actually growing. This is due to the fact that they are reaching audiences who would have otherwise been inaccessible through traditional media outlets.
  • There has been a shift in importance causing reporters to write for the web first, and print second. The reporting staff has adapted to use social media, web, photography, and other non-traditional avenues in their coverage.
  • Social media is a valuable tool in gaining real-time leads and also feedback to how the consumer feels about changes in interface, style, etc.

The panel discussion was very informative. There was a chance to meet with everyone in a face-to-face social atmosphere after the event at Off the Hookah. Due to time constraints I was not able to attend the post-event festivities, but hope to be able to next time.

SketchCrawl

sclogosmallThe 23rd World Wide SketchCrawl occurred on July 11th.

What is a SketchCrawl you ask? The SketchCrawl concept was born after Enrico Casarosa attended a PubCrawl for a friend’s bachelor party. Participating in this night of moving entertainment inspired him to do the same by replacing alcohol with pencil, paper, and watercolor.

“The basic idea: to record nonstop everything I could around me with my pencil and watercolors. A drawn journal filled with details ranging from the all the coffee I drank to the different buses I took. After a whole day of drawing and walking around the city the name seemed quite fitting: “SketchCrawl” – a drawing marathon. The crawl was more tiring than I imagined but also more fun and exciting than I had thought. Giving yourself this kind of mandate for a full day changes the way you look around you. It makes you stop and see things just a tad longer, just a bit deeper … needless to say I loved it.”

After completing his first SketchCrawl by himself he decided it would be more fun as a group event, eventually this led to a worldwide event involving hundreds of people.

There is no date for the next SketchCrawl event, but it might be fun. They seem to run once every few months, so I’ll post any information I hear about upcoming events. You can check out the sketches either on the website’s forum or their flickr page.
